Seat-less Teal Independent Kylea Tink has ruled out running in Bradfield -- instead backing a candidate who set up a fake electorate office after losing the last federal election.
Ms Tink lost her seat of North Sydney in the Australia Electoral Commission’s redrawn electorate boundaries and was being encouraged to run in Bradfield against Liberal Paul Fletcher.
The seat will be one to watch at the federal election -- due no later than May 2025 -- with the Liberals ramping up attacks on Teal candidates.
Last Monday, Mr Fletcher described Teals as a “con job” designed to trick people into voting for them.
Ms Tink announced on Saturday that she would not run, instead backing Nicolette Boele.
Ms Boele lost against Mr Fletcher in 2022 before opening a “shadow electorate office” in the area in Sydney’s north shore.
“This term of parliament has shown how powerful community-led representation can be. It has been one of the privileges of my life to represent my community of North Sydney and help drive the community-independent movement forward,” Ms Tink said.
“I have been proud to play a role in holding both major parties to account in this historic term of Parliament while helping to drive reform on issues that matter most to North Sydney.
“My decision not to run for the House of Representatives in 2025 has been a difficult one but ultimately I think it is in the best interests of the community independent movement and my family if I explore other ways in which I can continue to support this shift.”
Ms Tink praised Ms Boele’s advocacy for Bradfield.
“Having initially run in 2022, Nicolette’s ongoing advocacy for the community of Bradfield has shown she is deeply committed to ensuring people’s real voices and concerns are heard at the highest levels,“ she said.
“As a resident of Bradfield going forward, I will be voting for Nicolette Boele in the 2025 election.”
