Jack Solomons sentenced for attacking Westmead Hospital nurse Bec Davis

A man who went on a violent rampage inside Westmead Hospital’s emergency department, splitting a nurse’s skull and attacking a security guard, has learned his fate.

A man who assaulted nurse Bec Davis at Westmead Hospital so severely it caused her skull to split will be allowed to serve his jail sentence at home and his rehabilitation centre instead of behind bars.

Jack Solomons, 28, admitted himself to the hospital’s emergency department about 3am on September 11 last year after suffering chest pains from taking illicit drugs.

The Winston Hills man had failed to take medication to treat his mood and personality disorder, anxiety and depression.

“This was not a planned offence,’’ his barrister Frances Lalic said.

“By 5am he was clearly agitated, he was running around the ward, he was clearly psychotic at that stage.’’

That rampage included a terrifying assault on security guard Ramin Osmany as patients watched on in horror.

The court heard Solomons was thrashing about and leapt from his bed and stormed towards Mr Osmany, sending frightened staff dashing out of the room.

Solomons attacked the 41-year-old’s arm and face before chasing him and started charging towards Ms Davis, who attempted to flatten herself against a wall as he fixed his attention to her.

But she was trapped. The 32-year-old felt a punch to her back and managed to take two more steps before Solomons wrapped his arms around her neck.

“Due to the accused’s body weight and momentum, Davis fell forwards, causing her to strike her forehead against a metal edging of an emergency fire door,’’ police facts tendered to the court state.

“This resulting in a deep and penetrating laceration of her forehead from her hairline to her eyebrow. The momentum and weight of the accused resulted in the forehead of Davis splitting down to and exposing her skull.’’

She fell to the ground.

A pack of doctors, nurses and security guards had to pile up on Solomons and pin him to the ground but he was given sedatives to restrain him.

Solomons was charged the following day and pleaded guilty to common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and reckless wounding on October 8.

The terrifying attack occurred when he was on a good behaviour bond after being charged with two counts of possessing drugs in 2019.

At Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday, Magistrate Kristy Thompson said the attack on a nurse made it an aggravated incident.

“She’s a healthcare worker,’’ she said.

“Therefore, she’s considered a person to be particularly vulnerable.

“She’s a person who’s dedicated her life to helping people in the community by working as a nurse and is entitled to be … to feel safe in her workplace,’’ she said, adding that the attack left her and Mr Osmany with long-term health problems.

“It is clear the incident was also traumatic to those at the ward at the time, also in a vulnerable state due to the fact they were accessing medical treatment,’’ Magistrate Thompson said.

She sentenced him to an intensive correction order of two years and six months, which he will serve in the community.

The court heard Solomons developed depression, anxiety and mood disorders following his parents’ marriage breakdown as a child after being bullied through school and university.

He visited a psychiatrist in 2019 but did not treat his problems with medication and instead turned to drugs and steroids.

The court heard he was assaulted during the first three months in custody after his arrest on September 12 when his arm was broken. He was transferred to a rehabilitation centre before seeking help at another facility, Global Connect, where he must stay until he completes a program in February.

The court heard he had apologised to Ms Davies and was making improvements in his life, including undertaking training to become a truck driver.

“He has expressed remorse to the victim,’’ Ms Lalic said.

“He has worked very hard to rehabilitate himself and he was told he was not the same person today as he was a year ago.

“He will continue to address the underlying causes of his behaviour.’’

He was also convicted and sentenced to a 12-month community correction order for the drug possession charges.
