Feeling lucky? If you live in North Queensland, the NSW Mid-North Coast or Melbourne, Then you should buy yourself a lottery ticket.

Data released by Australia’s official lotteries, The Lott, has revealed that the North Queensland postcodes of 4740 and 4718 are among the country’s luckiest when it comes to snaring a lotto win.

In the 2020-21 financial year, the towns of Mackay, Kirwan and Thuringowa each had four division one lotto winners, who shared a slice of more than $62 million between them.

The Sunshine State also produced three division one lottery winners for the postcode of 4680 at Gladstone, which saw those winners share close to $3 million.

There were also three division one lottery winners for the NSW Mid-North Coast postcode of 2444 (Port Macquarie), and 2747 which includes the western Sydney suburbs of Jordan Springs, Werrington and Cambridge Park.

A further four postcode areas in Victoria, including 3802 (Endeavour Hills) 3337 (Melton), 3004 (Melbourne) and 3555 (Golden Square and Kangaroo Flat), also sold three division one lottery winning prizes.

There were 510 division one winning entries held by lottery players across the country that delivered more than $1.41 billion in division one prize money across the country.

Of the total division one prize money, 318 Aussies won $1 million or more. The biggest division one prize was $80 million sold at a Dromana Newsagent in Victoria.

The Lott’s spokeswoman Ally Ramsamy said last year’s lucky postcodes could throw up more winners in 2021-22, but said a windfall could land anywhere, anytime.

“While we saw pockets of wins in some states, regions and postcodes last financial year, it’s important to remember that a lottery win can land anywhere,” she said.

“Some players tell us they gravitate towards outlets that have recently sold a major prize in the hope it scores them a big win, while others avoid them believing lottery lightning won’t strike twice.

“Regardless of where you get your entry, you do need one in your hand before the draw’s close for the chance to win.”

She said amid the financial challenges of last financial year, breaking the life-changing news to division one winners was especially rewarding as they shared their hopes and dreams for their windfalls.

”We heard from winners who had just completed their cancer treatment, who had their win predicted by a psychic, and who were going to celebrate their good fortune by getting a Covid jab,” she said.

“It’s fair to say every Aussie has their own unique way of reacting to a division one win and their own special plans for how they will enjoy the prize with their loved ones.

Settlement City Newsagents, Port Macquarie, sold two of the suburb’s three division one winning lottery tickets last year.

Owner Bhavna Hinduja had only taken over as owner a day before the ticket was sold.

“We are so excited,” she said, after the winner was announced in June.

“Yesterday was our very first day as owners of this shop … We can’t believe we’ve already had a division one win. We were dreaming of this moment and it’s already here.

“Congratulations to our winner. We wish you all the best with your prize.

“Fingers crossed this is the start of a winning streak.”
