Australian superstar Hugh Jackman is mourning the loss of his dad who passed away on Father’s Day.

The 52-year-old revealed the “sad” news on Instagram on Monday saying he was also filled with “gratitude and love”.

“In the early hours of Father’s Day, my Dad peacefully passed away,” Jackman wrote.

“And whilst there is deep sadness, I am filled with such gratitude and love.

“My Dad was, in a word, extraordinary.

He devoted his life to his family, his work and his faith. I pray he is now at peace with God.”

In 2018, Jackman shared his love for his dad in a Father’s Day post.

“Happy Father’s Day to the man who taught me to show respect for others, for education, for being led by your passions,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Who taught me to never stop growing and learning.

“To work hard and realise that preparation is the bedrock for success.

“And above all, to find purpose beyond oneself. I love you dad.”

Jackman was raised by his dad Chris in Sydney after his parents separated.

The actor was eight and living in Sydney’s northern beaches with two brothers and two sisters when his mother, Grace, decided to leave and move back to the UK.

She broke the news in a telegram sent to them the following day.

It took Jackman until the age of “12 or 13” to realise his mother was never coming back.

Jackman told Australian Women’s Weekly in 2012 that he was haunted by the fear people were treating him differently because his mother left.

“One of the main things I remember is that horrible feeling that people were talking about you and looking at you because it was odd for the mother to leave.,” he said.

After Jackman’s parents divorced, his sisters, Zoe and Sonia, went to live with his mother in England while he and his brothers stayed in Sydney with their father, Chris.

Although his mother’s leaving scarred him, Jackman said he never felt she stopped loving him.

“The thing I never felt, and I know this might sound strange, I never felt that my mum didn’t love me. I’ve spoken about it at length with her since and I know she was struggling. She was in hospital after I was born suffering from post-natal depression,” he said.

“There wasn’t a support network for her here.”
