THE brightest sparks of the 2017 HSC have been recognised today at the First in Course ceremony in Sydney.

Students from 85 schools across NSW and beyond — from Jakarta to Merimbula, and Bourke to Maitland — attended the ceremony.

Boys swept HSC mathematics coming first or equal first in every course.

In the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects, boys took out 11 awards and girls nine, but 42 female students came top in language courses compared with 16 boys.

Girls also won the vocational education awards, snaring 11 certificates to five for boys.

Carlingford High School, in Sydney’s northwest, joined some of the state’s most elite schools with multiple students recording a first in course finish.

It was on par with nearby selective James Ruse Agricultural High School, which also took out two top placings.

Student Kim Rayoung came first in Japanese Beginners and Kaoru Fun Sato Hui came first for Hospitality Examination.

In total, 129 certificates were handed out to students from 85 different schools at the ceremony.

Of those students awarded the honour, eight topped the state in more than one course.

This year, Fort Street High School took out six awards, dominating the competitive mathematics subjects.

Catholic school students performed strongly, taking out first place in 19 subjects.

Catholic Schools NSW chief executive Dallas McInerney said students from suburban and regional schools were among the top performers.

He said: “It’s pleasing to see students top the state from Catholic schools in Lakemba, Westmead, Kogarah, Narellan, Hinchinbrook, Varroville, Lithgow, Ballina and Pambula.”

Mathematics prodigy Finnegan Waugh, who topped the state last year in Mathematics at St Joseph's Hunters Hill, took out Chinese Beginners externally through the NSW School of Languages (Randwick).

Headmaster of St Joseph’s College, Ross Tarlinton, said he was delighted with his success.

“It is a testament to Finn’s determination that he was the only student at the college to study Chinese Beginners which required discipline and self-motivation,” he said.

“The College was delighted to support him in his choice of subject and his hard work has paid off.”
