A MOTORIST is dead and traffic is banking up on the M1 north of Sydney following a horror car crash this morning.

Police confirmed the person was killed in the two-car crash in Warnervale near Sparks Rd just before 5am.

Authorities have closed the southbound lanes as crews work to clear scene.

All traffic is being diverted into Sparks Rd, Pacific Hwy and Wyong Rd.

“Traffic’s heavy, expect delays,” authorities said.

The dead person is yet to be identified and circumstances leading up to the crash remain unclear.

Police investigators have been called in to the scene.

The fatality comes just days after a teenager and his uncle died in a six-vehicle pileup on the same motorway near Mooney Mooney Bridge.

Jack Langford, 19, and Adam Langford, 52, were killed when a truck allegedly smashed into the rear of their ute before bursting into flames on Tuesday evening.

The tragedy prompted Chief Inspector Phil Brooks to thank passing motorists who stopped to help those injured in the crash.

“Police are certainly very thankful for the quick-thinking action of these bystanders,” he said.

“They’ve witnessed what is no doubt a very sad and tragic event and, in all likelihood, something they and their loved ones won’t forget.”
