A historic house in Sydney’s eastern suburbs erupted into flames this afternoon.
Fire crews and police arrived at a home on Ocean Ave, Double Bay at 3.45pm to find a single-storey weatherboard home with flames erupting from the roof.
An elderly couple who lived inside had already been evacuated by neighbours and did not require medical treatment.

Five fire trucks and a cherry picker helped bring the blaze under control inside the home, which is believed to be one of the oldest in Double Bay.
Neighbours told The Daily Telegraph they smelt “dense smoke” before heading outside to find the house alight.
“You could smell things burning, the smoke was very thick,” Helen, who did not provide her last name, said.
“It’s very sad … the house was apparently built in the 1830s. Hopefully the owners can restore what’s been burnt.”.
An investigation is underway into what caused the fire but it is not believed to be suspicious.
