HARRIET Wran’s critics should stop “demonising” her as she recovers from a crippling ice habit, says the drug addiction campaigner who counselled her family.

Tony Trimingham of the Family Drug Support Group said Ms Wran’s “remarkable” escape from the grip of a drug so powerful it robbed her of all sense as she lived for the next hit and slept rough was down to her resolve and mother Jill’s “unwavering” support.

Mr Trimingham says the 28-year-old is determined to rebuild her life after two years behind bars for her role in the robbery and murder of drug dealer Daniel McNulty.

“She’s doing remarkably well but she’s not out of the woods yet and her mother Jill is well aware of that and is continually hopeful,” said Mr Trimingham, whose group supported Mrs Wran for five years of her daughter’s most destructive times.

“It’s all too easy to demonise people who commit crime on drugs and say they should be locked up but prison is counter-productive for Harriet, her mother and society,” he said.

Mr Trimingham’s comments come after Ms Wran’s jailed drug dealer ex-boyfriend slammed the justice system for letting her walk free.

Michael Lee, 37, is serving 13 years for stabbing Mr McNulty to death in his Redfern flat. Lee says Ms Wran was a willing decoy to trick Mr McNulty into opening his door in 2014.

Lloyd Haines, Lee and Ms Wran, high on ice, burst in and robbed him before Lee stabbed him to death. Ms Wran was charged with murder but later pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of being an accessory after the fact of murder and robbery in company.
