DOREEN and Kerry Drynan “can’t imagine” life without their 35 greyhounds.
Doreen — a well-known greyhound trainer — has spent more than 50 years tending to dogs.
“I can’t imagine her without that to do every day,” Kerry said of her 78-year-old mother. “I don’t know how I’m going to keep her active.
“It’s not our livelihood but it is our life.
“It’s not all about racing for us — they’re our pets, they’re our family.” The mother and daughter, who were among the hundreds of protesters who rallied against the greyhounds ban outside NSW Parliament last week, said they hadn’t given up hope the controversial move would be scratched.
Her group was putting most of its resources into plans to mount a legal challenge against the Baird Goverment to see if they can “beat” the ban “in court”.
“If you can’t get justice in court then it’s a pretty sad state of affairs,” she said.
Kerry said most dog owners “welcomed reform”, but Mr Baird seemed intent on a total ban.
“He’s never been interested (in reform),” she said. “I’m not denying the problems are there and they needed to addressed.
“I just want him to be honest and do the right thing.”
Without prizemoney from racing, Kerry said it would become difficult to cover the $4000 per month costs of keeping their dogs.
