COMMUNITY members are being urged to watch out for a scratchie scam that has made it's way to Grafton.

Arthur Cooper said he received two scratchies and a pamphlet in the mail from Joy to Joy Tour, a Malaysian company claiming to "bring you the perfect holiday".

The very glossy and well presented scratchies claim to be in honour of the companies 12th anniversary.

Mr Cooper's scratchie said he had won US$180,000, but only if he provided further information.

"I'd like it to be true but I don't think it is," Mr Cooper said.

"They ask you to ring them and you must pay to get the money transferred."

Mr Cooper received the scratchies and brochure in the mail from Malaysia.

Part of the competition terms and conditions said, "The Company reserves the right at any time to cancel, modify, or supersede the competition should, in their sole discretion, circumstances warrant so."

The brochure also claims the Joy to Joy Tour has invested US$5 million into a five star hotel and theme park in Australia.

Scam Watch said scratchies are a common way groups or individuals try scam money out of people.

"We just recommend to simply disregard and not respond or throw the letter away," a spokeswoman said.

She added that there is usually a brochure and two scratchies where one scratchie is a win and the other is a loss.
