Revealed: Who’s our favourite hairdresser in the Clarence

The votes are in, and there’s a clear winner in our poll on who’s a cut above the rest for hairdressers in the Clarence Valley

A barber shop that serves coffee might not be everyone’s first idea, but for Kate and Ryan Ashington, they always knew it would be a cut above the rest.

And the public agrees, with Cuts on Fitzroy being voted the Clarence Valley’s favourite hairdresser, and it’s only getting busier.

The Grafton business came out on top after winning a poll with Daily Examiner readers after being nominated on Facebook.

“We’ve had the shop for five years, and when we did the renos we included the coffee shop,” Ms Ashington said.

“It’s been great, it’s always been a great business. Since the renovation we’re just flat out.”

Ms Ashington is on maternity leave, but has four hairdressers most with more than 15 years experience who are qualified barbers as well Ryan out the front to give customers and passes by their coffee fix.

And it’s the drop-in nature of the business is the secret to their success according to Ms Ashington.

“I think what people love is there’s no appointments, so women or men can come in their lunch break, and it’s so convenient,” she aid.

“And we’re very popular with the children.”

Ms Ashington said the couple never wanted to rely on each other’s side of the business for trade, instead working hand-in-hand.

“My customers grab a coffee on their way out, and Ryan’s are like ‘There’s a barber, what’s the chance of getting a haircut?’”

“It’s a very social place, we even say it would be so weird without the coffee. It creates a fun, social environment and think it’s so nice.

“There’s just a very comfortable vibe, a welcoming vibe and no hustle and bustle.

“It’s just a social little hole in the wall. It’s great to be recognised.”
