Recap: See how Covid spread through North Coast in 2020 with interactive timeline

As new cases of Covid-19 are detected on the North Coast

Evidence suggests timeline of COVID outbreak 'much earlier' than thought

As the North Coast is experiencing its first new Covid cases within the region since late last year, we can show you exactly how the virus spread last year in just a month.

With the first case detected in the 2478 Byron Bay postcode on March 12, 2020, our examination of the test figures from that period shows how the virus spread to more than 50 people in the month.

This spread was from the original coronavirus strain, and with superspreader events such as the Ruby Princess and quarantine measures and lockdowns not in place until the end of the month, the virus was left to spread largely on its own.

After the month, the Byron and Ballina region topped the area with the most cases, with testing facilities set up in the areas to cater for the new cases.

This time around, the Delta variant is managing to spread quicker and further despite the use of lockdowns and stay-at-home orders.
