Victoria masks building approvals fall in other states

BUILDING approvals rose nationally in November by 2.9% - but the improvement was based entirely on a rise in approvals in Victoria with approvals in every other state falling.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released its building approvals data for November on Thursday, showing an 8.7% rise in approvals in Victoria.

That increase was driven primarily by a rebound in the southern state in multi-unit dwellings and masked falls in all other states.

In Queensland, approvals fell 1.5% during the month, but remained up 13% on the year to November.

Similarly, in New South Wales, approvals fell 4%, but were up 19% on the year to date.

The biggest fall in approvals over the month was in South Australia, down 13.8%, with the smallest fall in Western Australia, down 1%.
