Police allege the driver of a car that crashed in South Grafton after being involved in a pursuit on Saturday was unlicensed.

Yamba man Rodney Richard Currie, 39, pleaded not guilty to all charges against him when he appeared in Grafton Local Court on Monday on a video link from Clarence Valley Correctional Centre.

Police alleged in court Currie admitted to being the driver when interviewed after a two-car crash in Bent Street on Saturday, February 19.

Tyson Randall was the owner of the vehicle and allegedly a passenger at the time of the incident.

He sustained a broken arm and fractures to his spine and sternum.

Mr Randall, 38, remains in a stable condition at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

A 22-year-old was also in the vehicle at the time.

Police allege the vehicle fled from officers and reached speeds in excess of 150km/h in a 50km/h zone.

The vehicle allegedly accelerated twice and slowed down before the police pursuit began in Bent Street, South Grafton.

The vehicle mounted a raised concrete barrier and collided heavily with a south bound Hyundai Getz at the corner of Ryan and Bent Streets, the court heard.

The passengers in the second vehicle, the Hyundai Getz, were uninjured.

The charges against Mr Currie include police pursuit – not stop, drive dangerously, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, drive a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, drive while licence cancelled, and drive furiously in a motor vehicle causing actual bodily harm.

When deciding whether or not to grant bail, Magistrate Kathy Crittenden considered the safety of the community and the proposed conditions of bail.

“He poses a great risk to other road users,” she said.

Ms Crittenden considered the application for bail and the conditions proposed by Mr Currie’s defence lawyer, Hugo Schleiger.

She refused bail to Mr Currie, stating the risks to the community could not be addressed by proposed bail conditions.

The matter is listed for March 28.

Mr Currie will remain in the Clarence Correctional Centre.
