A group of Grafton teenagers have been arrested after allegedly breaking into cars and stealing property as the city battles a wave of youth crime.
NSW Police stated three teenagers broke into two Toyotas parked in a driveway on Kent St, Grafton about 3:30am on Monday.
A short time later, the teens allegedly ran from police after being spotted on Breimba St.
Police stated they tracked down the trio on McHugh St.
The youths were taken to Grafton Police Station and will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.
Police charged the trio with larceny, enter vehicle without consent and goods in custody.
It comes as the Grafton community has become increasingly vocal about perceived light punishments for young offenders.
“Now let‘s hope they get the punishment they need, not just a slap on the wrist,” one person fumed on a popular local Facebook page.
Another concerned resident wrote: “It’s the system that lets the police and community down.” “If they are under 18 they get three free hits at breaking the law,” they said.
