Qld man Hamish White charged over 100km police pursuit

An 18-year-old Queensland man has been bail refused after being charged with multiple offences following a dangerous police pursuit on the NSW North Coast.

An 18-year-old Queensland man who was charged with multiple offences following a police pursuit on the NSW North Coast on Tuesday remains behind bars until at least next week.

Hamish White appeared in Grafton Local Court on Wednesday after being charged with seven offences including police pursuit - not stop, reckless driving, driving in a manner dangerous, driving while disqualified, receiving property that was stolen property outside NSW, driving with four or more unrestrained passengers, and driving without consent of the owner.

Mr White is one of six teenagers aged between 13 and 18 to have been charged after the incident ended with a crash on the Pacific Highway near Iluka.

Mr White did not make an application for release and is bail refused until at least next week when he will appear in Grafton Local Court again.

Police allege Mr White, the driver of a stolen Kia Rondo travelling north along the Pacific Highway at Dirty Creek on Tuesday afternoon, failed to stop, triggering a pursuit. The vehicle continued along the highway for more than 100km.

Police said several attempts were made to stop the vehicle, however each attempt was terminated due to safety concerns.

They will allege the vehicle crossed to the wrong side of the road, with several items being thrown from the vehicle at police.

Road spikes were successfully deployed at Iluka and the Kia eventually came to a stop and collided with two marked police vehicles.

Police officers arrested five teenage boys aged between 13 and 18 and a 15-year-old girl.

They were all taken to Grafton Police Station where Mr White, of Queensland, was charged.

A 14-year-old boy was charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without consent of the owner, throwing an item onto the road or into/onto a vehicle on the road, having part of his body outside a window or door and not having his seat belt adjusted/fastened.

A 15-year-old boy was charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without consent of the owner, throwing an item onto the road or into/onto a vehicle on the road and having part of his body outside the window or door.

The other two teenage boys, aged 13 and 14, were charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without consent of the owner.

All four boys were refused bail to appear at a children’s court Wednesday.

The girl was charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without consent of owner and having her seatbelt not adjusted or fastened.

She was granted conditional bail to appear at a children’s court in December.
