Police look to the community to help solve highway tragedy

Investigations continue into the death of Ulmarra man Marty Stait with police hoping someone out there has crucial dashcam footage of the night.

Investigations continue into the death of Ulmarra man Marty Stait with police reappealing for anyone with dashcam footage of the night to come forward.

“As part of ongoing inquiries, investigators are seeking dashcam footage from vehicles travelling on the Big River Way between Tyndale and Grafton between 5.30pm and 6.15pm on Friday, 6 August, 2021, and vehicles travelling on Bent Street at South Grafton between 6 and 6.10pm the same day,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

Mr Stait was travelling home along the Big River Way with his two young children when a roll of wire struck his vehicle. While his children were unharmed in the incident, Mr Stait sustained significant injuries.

Mr Stait was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and later airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries less than two days later.

Six days after the incident, a vigil was held for Mr Stait at the Grafton Twilight Markets where he used to have a gemstone stall. Friends, family and the wider community paid tribute to the father of two with a minute silence.

A GoFundMe page was also established with the goal to reach $50,000 to support Mr Stait’s family.
