Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help unravel a bizarre case in Yamba after a man was hospitalised with a broken arm after colliding with a vehicle.

Coffs/Clarence Police District Chief Inspector Joanne Reid said at about 5.30pm on Saturday a 20-year-old male was driving a Holden Colorado along Willow Way, Yamba when he attempted to avoid a large group of males that had been gathered at a nearby park between Hakea Avenue and Willow Way.

Chief Inspector Reid said the victim, a 32-year-old male, apparently stepped out onto the road and collided with the driver’s side mirror of the vehicle.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and the victim was taken to Maclean District Hospital with a suspected broken arm.

One line of inquiry police are pursuing is whether an organised fight was taking place at the location prior to the collision, and whether the two parties were known to each other.

“Police are still trying to ascertain how that collision has taken place, whether in the lead up to it there was an organised fight at that location and why a group of men were armed with large sticks and golf clubs,” Chief Inspector Reid said.

“It’s concerning either way that a group of males were armed in such a fashion, and we’re asking for any witnesses to come forward so that we can get a clearer picture of what happened.”

Chief Inspector Reid confirmed that both the driver of the vehicle and the victim have provided statements to police, and that no charges have been laid.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Yamba Police on 6646 2000, Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.
