Lucky Ann Anthony guilty after meth police pursuit through Grafton

A Grafton woman at the centre of a dramatic police pursuit while on meth had a tragic upbringing, a court heard.

A meth-fuelled driver who dodged a random breath stop triggering a police pursuit - stopped her car in the middle of the New Grafton Bridge, before slamming into a tree.

Lucky Ann Anthony, 31, pleaded guilty to three counts of driving while on an illicit drug, driving on a suspended licence, not stopping in a police pursuit, driving recklessly, exceeding a speed over 30km/h and breaching bail.

Anthony avoided an RBT before she sped 25km/h over the limit to evade police, dangerously overtaking other cars and nearly crashing into them, police facts state.

Her brother was also in the vehicle, and they briefly got out of the Holden Cruze when she stopped on the New Grafton Bridge.

They then sped off, later hitting a tree which saw the airbags break Anthony’s nose.

She was arrested and returned a positive result of methylamphetamine in a blood test.

The pursuit lasted five minutes and was captured on police in-car footage.

Anthony is an Indigenous woman born in Darwin, with parents who abused alcohol throughout her childhood, psychological notes tendered to court state.

Her father was extremely violent and was allegedly bludgeoned to death by her mother after he fractured Anthony’s skull as a one-year-old, court documents state.

No charges were laid against the mother.

Magistrate Annette Sinclair convicted Anthony and sentenced her to a 14-month intensive correction order, and she is to perform 60 hours of community service work. For driving on a suspended licence, Anthony was fined $400.
