IN ABOUT a month sporting groups using Ellem Oval at upper Fisher Park in Grafton will be reaping the benefits of a new sports pavilion which is nearing completion.
The pavilion being built near the existing tennis clubhouse in Prince St, is part of the wider sports complex plan being completed by Clarence Valley Council (CVC).
CVC deputy general manager Des Schroder said the building would cater predominantly for AFL, cricket and tennis clubs, but also be available for other sporting groups.
“It's looking quite substantial now – when it's all finished it's going to look excellent,” Mr Schroder said.
“It's got a canteen area, an upstairs viewing room which can be used by cricket umpires for observation.
“Then you've got two change rooms on either side for the teams who play there and also it has been built so the tennis guys can use the facility as well.”
Mr Schroder said despite the recent run of wet weather, the pavilion was still on track for a June completion date.
The pavilion project was only a part of the overall work going on at Fisher Park, Mr Schroder said.
“We're also replacing a heap of tennis courts there – about seven I think. They're actually being rebuilt to Tennis Australia standards so it'll be the equivalent to the national standard courts you'd play on anywhere in Australia,” he said.
Other upgrades included work on the hockey fields, expanding Ellem Oval to full AFL ground size and improvements to access, parking and fencing.
“The whole complex is being designed so that all the things we're doing will meet national standards basically,” Mr Schroder said.
Mr Schroder said the overall project was worth more than $2 million and was expected to be completed about August.
