HOW terribly British the Brexit vote has turned out to be.

Just about all concerned, apart from the right-wing loons like Nigel Farage, realise now it's a protest vote gone horribly wrong.

What appears to have started as a power play in the Tory Party to shore up the position of Prime Minister David Cameron, has ended a few months later with him tendering his resignation.

In the meantime it has granted the proto-Fascists in the UK Independence Party some sort of legitimacy, with Farage treated like a conquering hero, despite his appalling behaviour during the debate leading up to the vote and his grotesque comments afterwards.

His comment that the vote represented a win "without a single bullet being fired" just a week after the murder of Labour's Jo Cox by a man shouting "Britain First", was as tasteless as it gets in political life.

If the vote was not bad enough the fallout was extraordinary.

On Friday the most popular Google search in the UK was "what is the EU?" as millions of Britons logged in to find out what they had just voted themselves out of.

A website set up to promote the notion of having another go at the plebiscite went into meltdown as millions logged on to support it.

But it seems there is no going back for the UK. It's all stiff upper lip from here.
