Drink driving: A guide to safe drinking

A cane cutter who found himself naked and bloodied after breaking into a motel following a night of booze has appeared in court.

Jeffrey Nathan Gordon, 35, pleaded guilty in Maclean Local Court to unlawful entry on lands and intentionally or recklessly destroying property as well as two separate domestic violence charges.

The court heard Gordon had attempted to enter the Best Western Zebra Motel about 2am after a night of drinking, but was unable.

He then proceeded to undress himself, leaving his clothes on the footpath.

The court heard Gordon then broke into the motel through the glass doors while nude, inflicting cuts to himself and leaving a blood trail inside the motel.

Gordon then entered the premise and pulled the CCTV systems off from the shelf, causing a TV to fall to ground.

The police facts stated he then walked back to his car naked and left a blood trail, where he fell asleep.

Police were called to the scene shortly after 2am by reception staff, where they found a bloody Gordon “motionless” in his car sleeping with just a T-shirt on.

The court heard the man from Harwood believed his drinks were spiked and recalled “nothing”.

His solicitor, Mark Spagnolo, told the court the last thing Gordon remembered was “waking up in the police station”.

He was questioned by police at the time of the incident but appeared too intoxicated and was arrested.

Mr Spagnolo told the court Gordon was apologetic and accepted full responsibility for his actions.

The naked, drunken antics followed two domestic violence offences on December 4, 2021.

The victim – his ex-partner – had an AVO placed against him since February.

The court heard his ex-girlfriend received multiple text messages and audio messages from Gordon at 2pm while she was at Brooms Head, calling her a “gronk and a “c---”.

Gordon also threatened her over audio message.

“I’m coming to murder you, you f---ing rag,” he voice-messaged.

The court heard Gordon had taken full responsibility for his actions, which magistrate Kathy Crittenden described as inexcusable and of “utmost gravity”.

“People should feel safe and secure in their relationships, and should be entitled to end them as they see fit, without being subject to this kind of conduct,” Ms Crittenden said.

The court heard Gordon had accepted he had a drinking problem, but was working toward a better future.

Ms Crittenden later added: “The community does not tolerate domestic violence. Sentences the court impose reflect the community's attitude toward it.”

The magistrate said she took into account Gordon’s early guilty pleas, his low risk of reoffending and noted the incident was out of character.

Gordon was convicted and sentenced to a community corrections order for 18 months, with 50 hours of community service.

He was not convicted for entering the prescribed premises but was ordered to pay $2000 for the malicious damage of property at the motel.
