A young mother and her daughter were left terrified and helpless inside their own home after power drills were used in a terrifying attempt to break into their property in East Boambee.
The incident occurred about 7:30pm, after a mother and 10-year-old daughter had finished dinner and were preparing for bed.
The wannabe intruders immediately began drilling after the young family, who wish to remain anonymous, turned off their last light before bed.
They also entered through the roof cavity and garage, the mother claimed.
The single mother is in her thirties and said she felt terrified when she heard the drilling.
“I honestly thought I was going to be seriously injured,” she said.
“We just froze. It was so scary.’’
The mother said the perpetrators were watching her daughter outside the window before the incident.
“I definitely feel unsafe in this neighbourhood,” she said.
Her daughter said she was left “petrified” after the incident, the mother said.
“We didn't sleep last night, my daughter’s worried there’s people hiding in the house.”
Coffs Harbour police were called, with dog squads and forensics arriving shortly after.
“One of my biggest fears was waiting for the police. Having a police station closer than Coffs Harbour would’ve made me feel safer,” she said.
The young mother and her daughter believe at least two people were involved in the break-in attempt.
Police reportedly questioned neighbours in the area and are reaching out for CCTV footage.
Residents are urged to contact crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 if they have any information.
Police said an extensive search was conducted with the assistance of the dog unit, however the suspects were not located.
