A North Coast man has made a bid for bail after he allegedly led officers on a 100km car chase which ended with him ramming into two police cars and being attacked by a police dog.

South Grafton man Jacob Carney, 22, appeared via videolink at Grafton Local Court on Monday.

The 22-year-old was arrested on Thursday, March 14, after he and a 16-year-old boy allegedly led police on a chase down the M1, from West Ballina to Iluka.

At the time of these alleged offences the court heard Carney was on bail for other alleged offences.

Since being granted bail, the young man has once again found himself in trouble with the law.

Police officers tried to stop Carney, who was allegedly driving a stolen Ford Focus with a 16-year-old, on the Pacific Motorway at West Ballina about 12.20am on Thursday, according to NSW Police.

When he failed to stop a pursuit was initiated, police allege.

Carney allegedly led officers on an M1 chase stretching about 100 kilometres before ramming into two police cars near Iluka.

He was bitten by a police dog during the arrest and had to be treated by paramedics for a dog-bite injury.

He was subsequently charged with engaging in a police pursuit, driving unlicensed without ever being licensed, driving a vehicle taken without consent, use of an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and hindering or resisting police.

In court on Monday defence lawyer Matilda Lynch said Carney may have mental health conditions and had strong community ties.

The prosecution opposed bail, citing community safety and the fact Carney was already on bail when the alleged offending occurred.

Magistrate Jeff Linden described the alleged offending as “hair raising”.

“(There allegedly) was a hair raising police pursuit … where speeds of up to 180km/h were reached,” he said.

Mr Linden refused Carney’s bail bid, telling the court he had “no confidence” the young man would comply with the conditions.

Carney will next appear in court on July 16.

The 16-year-old boy has been charged with being carried in a vehicle taken without consent and intentionally throwing an object at a vehicle, risking safety.

He was granted conditional bail and is next due to face court on April 12.
