Fence post mayhem: Hoons get away with it

RESIDENTS fear it’s only a matter of time before someone is killed at a hoon hotspot in Grafton.

IF SOMETHING isn't done to stop the reckless hoons who speed along the dirt road of Prince St soon, residents fear it's only a matter of time before someone is killed.

Steve Bell, who keeps horses in a paddock along the stretch of Prince St that leads to the Kirchner St boat ramp, said P-platers crashing into fence posts was a regular event along the short stretch of road.

"These young blokes are going down there and doing burnouts and drifting around the corner and wiping out fences all the time," he said.

"One of them is going to get themselves killed, it's going to happen.

"There was a car that went through the paddock fence this week, and that's the third time it's happened just recently."

Owner of the property Beck Plunkett-Hicks said she was annoyed that she was footing the bill of the destructive driving.

"We are the ones always putting new posts in and fixing the fence," she said.

"It's costing us money, basically."

Ms Plunkett-Hicks said her family had owned the property for four years, and the situation had been getting worse over the past 18 months.

"The most frustrating thing is it seems the police aren't doing anything about it," she said.

"How many kids need to be killed in accidents before something is done, and they show a complete disregard for other people's property. It seems like they get away with it all the time, there's no punishment or consequence at all, and I want them to be accountable for the damage they've done."
