A murderer who brutally bashed a man to death with his fists and a desk drawer during a bungled robbery has landed back in court after attacking a prison guard.
Central Coast man Euriah Maaka fronted Grafton Local Court on Monday.
The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to assaulting a correctional officer and inflicting actual bodily harm.
Maaka has called Clarence Correctional Centre home ever since he was convicted of murdering Bill Gogos, 53, a decade ago.
In 2015, Maaka was jailed for 20 years with a non-parole period of twenty years after he pleaded guilty.
Maaka, aged 18 at the time of the murder, was driving a stolen Mercedes Benz when he pulled up outside Mr Gogos’ Hamlyn Terrace home, assuming the property was unoccupied.
But Maaka discovered Mr Gogos inside the home – and beat him relentlessly.
When the law caught up with Maaka and he was told he would be charged with murder, he replied: “Whatever.”
Maaka’s latest offending occurred just after 5pm on April 25, according to court documents.
His unit in the maximum security section of the prison went into lockdown.
Maaka refused to return to his cell, unlike other inmates, despite being ordered to multiple times and being threatened with a defensive “chemical agent”, presumably capsicum spray.
“(He) continued in an agitated state and twice went into a fighting pose, refusing to return to his cell,” police state in the documents.
“The victim drew his chemical agent for the second time … and warned (Maaka) it would be used.”
Maaka remained “in a fighting stance”, pulled a beanie down his head and propped the collar of his shirt up.
“With his hands up in the fight position and tucking his head, (Maaka) charged at the victim with clenched fists,” the documents state.
The officer hit Maaka with a spray of the chemical but he “burst through the spray and continued at the victim, running at him, shoulder charging him and attempting to strike him using his right fist at the same time”.
The officer was knocked backwards by the charge and began to “defensively kick” out at Maaka, forcing the murderer away from him.
Maaka was eventually restrained by multiple prison officers.
The injured officer was dragged away and medical scans later revealed he had suffered ligament damage to his right elbow.
Magistrate Juliana Crofts sentenced Maaka to three months imprisonment.
