A GALA dinner and ceremony at the Yamba Golf and Country Club tomorrow will pay tribute to the achievements and contributions made by Clarence residents.

Clarence Valley Council promotions co-ordinator Vanessa Brown said the dinner would make a stylish change to the council's Australia Day program.

She said the council's barbecue packs, to help community groups celebrate Australia Day, had been very popular.

The council had received 93 applications for the barbecue packs, but was limited to provide 60.

They were designed to get neighbourhoods together to join the spirit of the day.

Councillor Sue Hughes will represent the council at a number of Australia Day functions and will be joined by Australia Day ambassador, TV personality Frank Colletta.

They will start the morning with a flag-raising ceremony at the Port of Yamba Historical Society and will join Australia Day barbecues at the Yamba Surf Life Saving Club, Brushgrove and, if time permits, Lawrence.

Australia Day is celebrated on January 26 each year. This day is an opportunity for us to think about the importance and value of being Australian. We celebrate what we have achieved as a nation together and recommit to making Australia an even better place for the future. Some 13,000 people from 143 countries became Australian citizens on Australia Day last year.

Since the first Australian citizenship ceremony in 1949, more than four million people have chosen to become Australian citizens.

Around 325 citizenship ceremonies are hosted across the nation on and around Australia Day by local councils and community groups.

Despite the devastating floods, Brisbane City Council raised spirits by hosting last year's largest Australia Day citizenship ceremony with just over 1000 people becoming citizens at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
