A small coastal town is set to host an international women’s golf event, attracting the best talent from across the world.
Yamba Golf and Country Club will host the Women’s NSW Open Golf Championship in 2024.
Yamba Golf and Club Country Club operations manager Chris Durrington said it will be the “biggest thing the Clarence Valley has ever seen”.
“The tournament will feature the biggest names in golf with a half-million dollar prize,” Mr Durrington said.
With more than half of the competitors coming from foreign countries, Mr Durrington said the event will attract world-class players.
Having supported female golf for several years, Mr Durrington said he is seeing more women aged between 20 and 40 picking up a club.
“After Covid, people were craving the outdoors - getting out there and seeing goannas and kangaroos makes for a perfect afternoon,” he said.
The Yamba course encapsulates much of what makes the Clarence so appealing: Lush greenery by the beach so golfers can hear the waves swirl as they swing.
Mr Durrington said the tournament will be broadcast internationally, showcasing the area.
Clarence Valley MP Chris Gulaptis said the tournament would be a “sporting spectacular” and give local golf enthusiasts the chance to see high quality action.
He said “women are the headline”, and the event will put an international spotlight on Yamba.
“It’s wonderful to showcase women’s golf in our region,” Mr Gulaptis said.
Other NSW regions will benefit by hosting separate events, after Golf NSW partnered with the NSW Nationals to lock in a series of tournaments over the next two years.
The various tournaments across NSW will attract 16,000 visitors to the host regions, with an estimated $13 million injected into the visitor economy.
