A special service of thanksgiving will be held for Prince Phillip, Duke Edinburgh at Grafton’s Christ Church Cathedral this evening.

The service at 6pm will honour his life, his devotion to the Queen and their family, and his service to the Commonwealth.

“Prince Phillip has been a major part of our public life for decades, so it’s a very significant event in the life of our nation and community,” Dean of Grafton, the Very Reverend Dr Gregory C Jenks, said.

“As Anglicans we have a particular connection to the Royal family, and Anglican churches around the world will be holding similar services.”

While Dr Jenks was hopeful state, federal, and local government representatives will attend the service, it will not include any formal speeches.

“Just a simple service with old traditional Church of England music, which will be played across the world.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, numbers will be limited to 150 people and electronic registration required as people enter the cathedral. However, outside speakers will cater for additional people who turn up.

“In normal times we’d have the place full for something like this,” Dr Jenks said.

The cathedral will also be open for personal prayers from 4pm.

“For the kids like me who did the Duke of Edinburgh (Award) scheme, he’s almost a household nMW in another way, because for people who’ve been involved in the program he’s up there with the gods,” Dr Jenks said.
