Fire authorities are reminding residents to remain vigilant following two recent incidents in Yamba.
Earlier this month Yamba Fire and Rescue attended an incident in which a stove grill was left on, causing significant damage to the appliance.
“Upon arrival we were informed that the residents had put the fire out using a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket which were readily available in the kitchen,” Yamba Fire and Rescue acting captain John Hallam said.
“It serves as a good reminder that when you’re cooking, always keep looking and have a fire blanket and extinguisher handy.”
On Monday morning, Yamba Fire and Rescue Station 510 and other emergency services were called to a property on the Mainbrace which was well alight.
Fortunately, no one was home at the time, but a large plume of smoke coming from the house could be seen some distance away.
“Upon arrival a charged line of 38mm hose was deployed and two firefighters donned breathing apparatus and were tasked with fire attack,” Mr Hallam said.
“Power to the house was isolated and other members were tasked into donning breathing apparatus.”
Despite the efforts of multiple firefighters, including support from Maclean Fire and Rescue, Goonellabah Hazmat and Wooloweyah and Gulmarrad RFS, the house was completely destroyed, with police now investigating the cause of the fire.
“This is a timely reminder that calling triple-0 for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed,” Mr Hallam said.
“The triple-0 service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you.”
