Clarence Valley iconic Copmanhurst Anglican Church up for sale

A 107-year-old Clarence Valley church is up for sale and while it might not get buyers to heaven, it does have a great view.

Australia's property price growth reaches new high

A unique piece of real estate has hit the property market that could appeal to people scouring the coastline for their own little piece of heaven.

The Church of the Holy Apostles has been an entrance statement to the village of Copmanhurst, 25 minutes drive west of Grafton, for 107 years.

Dougherty Property selling agent Tyler Marsh said it was a privilege to sell a property that redefined the real estate cliche of “unique”.

“Everybody’s talking about it,” he said.

“It’s only been on the internet for a few days and I’ve had interest from all over NSW and Queensland.”

The church was closed earlier this year with falling numbers and Covid restrictions meaning no services had been held within its walls for almost two years.

Its foundation stone was laid by the first Bishop of Grafton Cecil Henry Druitt in 1914 and its doors opened in February 1915.

It joined the Anglican parish midway through 1975.

It boasts an impressive range of well-maintained features, including arched timber doors, high raked ceilings, stained glass windows, polished floor boards and of course, lots of space.

“It’s a basic building,” Mr Marsh said.

“Most people have shown the romantic interest of converting it into a residence and retaining the heritage aspects.

“But there have been inquiries from people looking to turn it into an art gallery, or retain it as a chapel.”

It sits on nearly 1700sq m, has rear access and a vantage point over the town.

It will go to auction on October 16 at 10am.

“There’s not a lot of comparable evidence we can draw upon for a price,” Mr Marsh said.

“It really has struck the imagination of quite a few.”
