Cameron Sivyer: Coldstream man sentenced for breaching domestic violence orders

A Clarence man, fresh out of custody, berated his ex with calls, messages and sinister Instagram posts, contacting her more than 100 times in just a week and hassling her work.

A northern NSW chef did not let more than 60 days behind bars on remand hold him back – he soon returned to berating his ex-girlfriend with countless phone calls and texts.

On Monday, Coldstream man Cameron Sivyer, 33, (also referred to as Cameron Barron), who has also lived at Broken Hill and Grafton, faced the music after he once again flagrantly disobeyed court orders put in place to protect his ex-partner.

He pleaded guilty to three counts of contravening restrictions in an apprehended domestic violence order (ADVO)

At the time of offending, Sivyer was already on two community corrections orders — one from Broken Hill, the other from Coffs Harbour — after he was previously convicted of three counts of common assault and contravening restrictions in an apprehended domestic violence order (ADVO), a court heard.

Sivyer first came to the attention of police when he punched, spat in the face of, and threw suitcases, at his then girlfriend the night they moved in together at a Grafton home last August, according to court documents.

He was convicted of these three offences.

But soon after being convicted of three counts of assault, he breached his ADVO in a flurry of video and voice calls he sent to his former partner, and her new Coffs Harbour workplace, — last September.

“In one week (Sivyer) has contacted the victim 107 times via telephone and 16 times via video message,” police state in court documents.

This year, he breached the ADVO three times — via phone calls, voice messages and Instagram stories when he was given bail and released from remand.

On May 20, just days after Sivyer was freed following months behind bars awaiting sentence, he sent private Instagram stories to his girlfriend, a court heard.

In one message he stated “give me a call” and in a second he wrote: “Lesson learnt obviously, two months in jail to learn my lesson … I hope you were a person of your word and would wait for me.”

In court, defence lawyer Brett Marshall said his client was not drinking anymore and not aware of privacy settings in the app when he sent the messages on Instagram.

However, Magistrate Juliana Crofts said she was concerned by Sivyer’s continual breaching of court orders.

She said the “sheer number” of calls and the “repetitive” nature of them could not be overlooked, particularly as Sivyer continued to offend after being sentenced in Broken Hill and Coffs Harbour.

“The sheer number of times you have tried to contact the victim is hugely excessive,” she said.

Sivyer was convicted and sentenced to a fresh 14-month intensive corrections order.
