AN Australian Special Forces soldier was wounded during a disruption operation in Uruzgan province, Afghanistan on Thursday.

AN Australian Special Forces soldier was wounded during a disruption operation in Uruzgan province, Afghanistan yesterday.

Defence has confirmed the joint disruption operation was being run about 45km north-west of Tarin Kot when the soldier was shot.

Members of the Afghan National Security Forces and the Special Operations Task Group were involved in the operation.

SOTG commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel J (who cannot be named), said the soldier was conscious, interacting with medical staff and had spoken with his family.

"The soldier received immediate treatment from his mates on the ground, who have been trained to handle potentially life-threatening situations," Lieutenant Colonel J said.

The soldier was evacuated by helicopter to the Role 2 medical facility at the Multi-National Base, Tarin Kot, before transfer to Kandahar's Role 3 NATO medical facility.

Defence said it would provide ongoing support to the soldier's family.

Authorities will not release the soldier's name.
