Two new $2.5 billion towers are being unveiled on Thursday and will be built on land the NSW Government is rezoning next to Central Station.

The Central Place development will be a central part of the rezoned precinct at Railway Square that is seen as Sydney’s answer to Silicon Valley and a crucial driver of jobs coming out of the coronavirus recession.

“Located alongside the new Atlassian headquarters, Central Place alone will deliver over 150,000 square metres of commercial floor space for technology and innovation companies,” Jobs and Investment Minister Stuart Ayres said.

“The project will support more than 700 jobs in construction and more than 10,000 jobs once complete.

“It will help cement innovation and technology as key drivers of growth, contributing to secure job creation across all industries,” he said.

The winning design was selected following the first City of Sydney design competition run entirely online, with participants from over six countries.

Developer Dexus and Frasers Property Australia chose the winning design for the two towers following an online competition with participants from six countries.

In addition to the two 39-storey office towers it features a round coliseum-style landmark building powered completely by renewable energy.

“The future of work and workplaces will be defined by the technology and innovation businesses who will occupy this precinct,” Dexus chief executive Darren Steinberg said.

The NSW Government is unlocking and rezoning 24-hectares of government land around the project that will eventually straddle Central Station.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance said: “This is an important piece of the puzzle to transform the area through uniting a world-class transport interchange with innovative and diverse businesses and high-quality public spaces.

“It will embrace design, sustainability and connectivity, while celebrating Central’s unique built form and social and cultural heritage while becoming a centre for the jobs of the future and economic growth.”
