Atlassian reveals plans for timber hybrid tower at Sydney’s Central Station

Australian software giant Atlassian has unveiled the design plans for its new state-of-the-art headquarters in the heart of Sydney.
The company has hired New York-based architects SHoP and Australian firm BVN to build the world’s tallest hybrid timber tower that will operate on 100 per cent renewable energy.
The 40-storey skyscraper will be far from a concrete jungle, instead featuring natural ventilation and large planted terraces and a glass and steel exterior with a mix of outdoor and indoor spaces.
Located in the Central Station precinct, the building will use 50 per cent less embodied carbon than conventional business offices during the construction phase.
The finished headquarters will have vertical solar panels to generate power onsite while also using 50 per cent less energy than conventional buildings.
Atlassian co-founder and co-CEO Scott Farquhar said the company was committed to creating more jobs and innovation as the Australia economy recovered from COVID-19.
“Technology can turbocharge Australia’s recovery. That’s why we’re building this precinct. We want to create jobs, ideas and innovation,” Mr Farquhar said.
“Sydney has the potential to be one of the world’s leading technology cities and the creation of a tech precinct sends a loud signal that we’re in the race to take a slice of the world’s most valuable market. That’s an exciting place to be.
“This building will breathe new life into this part of Sydney. It’s an amazing design. We’ve searched the world to find the best architects and engineers to put it together.”
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the new headquarters would help Sydney rival the American Silicon Valley.
“Atlassian is a great Australian success story and it’s very fitting for them to have their headquarters here in Sydney,” she said.
“Tech Central will rival Silicon Valley as the place to be. This means more jobs and opportunities for all of our citizens.”
The construction of the new building will create 2500 additional jobs and add almost $1b to the economy. It is expected to be finished by 2025.
