Gay app date impaled after three-floor fall in Surry Hills
Detectives investigating a life-threatening fall from a Surry Hills balcony are seeking a mystery man they believe may have met the victim earlier that day via dating app Grindr. The injured man had fallen three floors from a balcony onto a ground-floor patio, impaling himself on a table leg.
A mystery man caught on CCTV leaving a Surry Hills apartment soon after his Grindr date fell three floors from a balcony is being sought by NSW Police.
The victim, a Swedish-American national, is in a critical condition after he attempted to climb over the railing to the next floor in Brisbane St in the heart of the city 10 days ago.
Police said the pair communicated before meeting at the victim’s home on Sunday November 4.
Police say they need to talk to the man who is seen entering the building carrying a bag and then leaving several hours later without the bag.
“This person is a witness, we don’t believe he has had any involvement in the person going over or his actions around the fall,” said Surry Hills Commander, Detective Superintendent Gavin Wood.

“We believe that person can shed some light on the reason and rationale for this male to fall from the balcony,” he added.
Police said the man’s parents and brother had flown out from the United States to be with him and said his condition is still critical and he had been unable to be interviewed by police since being put into an induced coma.
Supt Wood said despite the man being in the apartment at the time of the fall, and for several hours that day, he doesn’t believe there was any foul play involved.
“We are very clear that person was in that apartment at the time of the fall.
“We seek the public’s help and assistance to find the person in the photos.”
Police from the Surry Hills Police Area Command were called to the unit block in Brisbane St just before 4pm.
They located the man on the ground floor patio, where he had impaled himself on a table leg.
The man is now in a critical condition, in an induced coma at St Vincent’s Hospital Intensive care unit.
Supt Wood said the man had climbed over the balcony himself, and is hoping the witness can help explain why.
Supt Wood said the man had been at the 37-year-old’s apartment for quite some time that day and have CCTV footage showing him arriving and departing.
“The pictures speak for themselves,” he said.
“I’m very confident that people in the public when they see that vision will know who that is.
“We ask him to contact us.”
Supt Wood said the best way to describe the incident is horrendous.
“This man’s life has been significantly compromised, again, it’s our job now to establish why its happened.”
Supt Wood said users need to be situationally aware when using dating apps.
“Know who you are meeting, where you’re meeting them, what their intentions are and perhaps establish some safeguards beforehand such as providing close friends with those details,” Supt Wood said.
