FOUR MEN are lucky to be alive after their car mounted the kerb, slammed through a tree and flipped multiple times at a truck-stop during an alleged police pursuit in Sydney’s southwest overnight.
The red Ford Falcon XR6 was allegedly driving at 148 kilometres an hour in a 110 zone on the Hume Highway near Menangle just after 1am on Sunday when police spotted it and initiated a pursuit.
The 21-year old male driver is understood to have merged almost immediately onto a truck-stop exit at extremely high speeds after the pursuit began, losing control of the vehicle and veering up onto the kerb.
The car then crashed through a tree and a ‘no stopping’ sign, flipping multiple times before coming to rest on its roof — leaving a 50-metre-long trail of shattered glass, car debris and chunks of wood.
The four men travelling inside the vehicle are believed to have removed themselves from their crumpled car. Miraculously, the driver and one passenger sustained only minor injuries. The other two passengers were unharmed.

Officers from the NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command established a crime scene. The driver and one passenger were taken to Liverpool Hospital for treatment. Police have since released the other two passengers.
Rural Fire Service firefighters attended the scene and extinguished the smoking vehicle. A tow truck driver could also be seen putting debris back into the mangled body of the car before transporting it away.
Holiday-maker Tod, 46, was showering in his caravan at the truck-stop while his wife slept when he heard the “scary” sound of metal on asphalt and debris hitting his vehicle.
“I heard this loud sound of something flying through the parking lot and debris splattering everywhere,” he said.
“I thought something must have come off a truck, but when I came out I saw the whole tree had been turned into debris and had hit all over our car.”
Tod said he couldn’t see the nature of the men’s injuries in the dark, but said he could hear them arguing with each other immediately after the crash.
“It’s got me shaking,” he said. “This is our first day of holidays, we pull over for a kip and this happens. I’m paranoid now.”
Chief Inspector Phillip Brooks said that the occupants of the car are lucky to be alive.
“It’s extremely worrying to have four young people involved in a crash when the driver is allegedly unlicensed and speeding, when sadly 209 lives have already been lost on NSW roads this year,” he said.
“Their families should be feeling very lucky.”
