NSW leaders to outline vision for Sydney

A new high school will finally be built in the booming Western Sydney suburb of Edmondson Park, as the region struggles with a backlog of schools leading to almost 2000 demountable classrooms being used as a stopgap solution.

The NSW Government has pledged a new high school for the suburb catering for 800 students will open by 2027, after the school was first promised by the former Coalition government in 2018.

It’ll be built on government-owned land next to Edmondson Park Public School, which opened to students earlier this year.

It means previous plans put forward by developers to build the new high school in a nine-storey mixed-used tower including shops and apartments have been spiked in favour of a traditional campus at the site, with the precinct expected to eventually cater for up to 2000 students.

The new high school will go some way to addressing a backlog of schools needed in the region.

Thousands of students across western Sydney are being taught in makeshift demountable classrooms, with 1811 in the region currently in use.

Premier Chris Minns said he understood that parents moving into growing suburbs on Sydney’s outskirts were frustrated at not having local schools to send their kids too.

“I’m really pleased to announce plans have begun to build a local high school here on government land in Edmondson Park, right next door to the new primary school,” he said.

“My dad was a schoolteacher. I know how important strong public education is. But it starts with having enough schools to cater for students in growing areas.”

Deputy Premier and education Minister Prue Car said the new school would cater to the rapidly expanding south west of the city.

“Every student should have the right to attend a school in their local area, and this community waited too long under the former government for that to become a reality,” she said.

Macquarie Fields MP Anoulack Chanthivong added the announcement came after a community campaign for a school in the area.

“It’s fantastic to see the public school complete after a long community campaign, and I can’t wait to see what students and teachers can achieve with their new facilities,” he said.

Alan Bettison, whose three grandchildren currently attend primary schools in the area, said the new high school was a welcome addition to an area battling for infrastructure following an influx of new residents.

“It’s a much needed resource out in the south west and we’re very pleased to hear it’ll go ahead,” he said, adding at least one of his grandchildren would likely attend the new high school.
