A massive supermarket chain has been revealed as the anchor tenant for the booming Melrose Park shopping precinct.

Plans before Parramatta Council show a Coles could open in the $700m masterplanned Melrose Park Town Centre which Deicorp and Payce are developing.

A planning document said the proposed supermarket at 33 Hope St was critical to generate employment and serve residents.

“The supermarket is the intended key anchor use for the retail component and is integral to creating a genuine mixed use centre within the Melrose Park North precinct,’’ it stated.

“The proposed supermarket will contribute to the vibrancy, economic success and amenity within the Melrose Park North precinct.’’

A public park is planned to the north of the supermarket, which proposes a click-and-collect area, open every day from 6am to midnight and have 512 car spaces.

The Melrose North precinct, which is largely industrial, is poised to undergo a rapid transformation and contributes to the suburb’s forecast population explosion of 11,000 dwellings in under 15 years.

Along with the supermarket, a five-storey commercial podium, private hospital, six-tower apartment complex with 494 units and childcare centre are earmarked for the town centre.

A state planning panel is still assessing the development, but approval is expected to be imminent.

There has also been a push to extend the Parramatta light rail to Melrose Park to serve the surging population.

Holdmark Property Group also has plans to transform an industrial zone at Wharf Rd and Waratah St at Melrose Park, and Wharf Rd at Ermington, into a waterfront neighbourhood.

Feedback into the Coles supermarket plans can be made between January 16 and February 7.
