There were distressing scenes in Bellingen on Monday night after a 7-year-old boy was involved in a serious motorcycle accident.

Just before 5pm emergency services were called to Roses Road after reports a boy had come off a motorbike.

The Advocate understands he was taken to Bellingen hospital by his parents.

Later in the evening the Westpac Rescue Helicopter landed in Connell Park, ready to take the young boy to hospital.

Police officers and bystanders watched on as paramedics prepared to transfer the 7-year-old into the helicopter as two people embraced.

The boy is believed to have suffered serious head and chest injuries and was in a critical condition.

Just after 7:30 pm the Westpac Rescue Helicopter left for John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.
