These are just some of the common sentiments being shared as the news spreads through the community of the death of Alex Crowe on Tuesday afternoon.
Much-loved and respected in the Coffs Harbour community, and Nana Glen in particular where the family lived, he collapsed during a flight from Sydney to Coffs Harbour and could not be revived.
Former Coffs Harbour MP Andrew Fraser was on the flight and he praised the valiant efforts of those who came to his aid.
His son Russell was in Australia at the time and confirmed the news via twitter . On social media he described his father as “the most gentle of men”.
The Crowe family’s generosity in the region is legendary from supporting local businesses at every opportunity to founding the Nana Glen Heartstart program - even donating $200,000 for a pool at Nana Glen Public School after a drowning tragedy.
Newcomers to the area very soon learn of the Crowe family reputation and also their desire for privacy.
Coffs Harbour Mayor Denise Knight has paid tribute to their “outstanding” contribution to the community and has reminded people to respect the privacy of friends and family at this difficult time.
“On behalf of the myself and the community our condolences and heartfelt sadness goes out to the entire family and please respect their privacy at this time.”
The Nana Glen Community News Facebook page also paid tribute to Alex, sharing a recent photo of him celebrating his 85th birthday with the following words:
“Alex is well known throughout the region for his love of a joke and always had a mischievous twinkle in his eye. He was one of the founders of Nana Glen Heartstart and remained passionate about the valley in which we live.
“On behalf of the Nana Glen community, we offer our sincere condolences to Jocelyn, Russell, Terry, Chelsea and the entire Crowe family.”
People have also taken to the Coffs Coast Advocate Facebook page to show their respect.
