TWO men were so desperate for a drink early yesterday they stormed into the Sawtell Bowling Club to grab armfuls of booze.

The bandits triggered an alarm about 12.20am when they used a hammer or mallet to smash a rear glass automatic door.

The duo, who was captured on closed circuit television cameras, darted inside and grabbed as much alcohol as they could carry away from the bar.

They ended up with as many as 12 Vodka Cruiser bottles and six Smirnoff pre-mix drinks and fled the building the same way they had entered.

A neighbour awoken by the noise of smashing glass contacted police, who searched the area. Security guards were also called to the scene.

The robbers are believed to have fled south along a nearby creek.

One of the intruders was described as 180cm to 185cm tall with a solid build and wearing a grey hoodie and a sloppy joe.

The other was described as 165cm to 170cm tall wearing what was believed to be black trackpants, a black and white chequered shirt and blue canvas deck shoes.

Club management had the shattered door fixed by yesterday morning and the repair bill was expected to be at least $1000.

If you have information about the raid, you are urged to contact Coffs Harbour police station on 6652 0299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
