A Coffs Harbour tradie has found himself back in court after failing to complete a community service order in the wake of a common assault conviction.

Te-Rangi Regler, 26, had difficulty fulfilling the 150-hours’ service requirement because of a series of personal circumstances, including that he had been working away from Coffs as a plasterer, the court heard.

His lawyer said Regler was now working as a roofer, but magistrate Brett Shields said while he acknowledged the challenging circumstances “the court needs to insist that orders are respected”.

The underlying offence was one of common assault and stemmed from an incident on March 28, 2020, when Regler approached a woman who was packing her car with groceries after shopping at Woolworths, Park Avenue.

Te-Rangi Regler was fined $2000 and sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order when he appeared in Coffs Harbour Local Court on July 27.

According to the police facts, Regler swung the woman’s car door, which hit a bag of dog food she was carrying.

The woman was not injured but police were contacted.

Later that day officers saw Regler sitting at a bus stop near the supermarket and asked his name, to which he replied “I’m god”, according to the police facts.

Asked where he lived: “I’m from hell, that’s where you are going.”

The officers arrested Regler and said he appeared to be agitated and drug affected, according to the police facts.

On July 12, 2021, Regler was convicted of common assault and given a 12-month community corrections order and 150 hours of community service work.

In sentencing Regler this week at Coffs Harbour Local Court, Mr Shields revoked that original order and issued a fresh 12-month community corrections order.

He also fined Regler $2000.
