THE State Government has announced plans to make speeding cameras more visible following a campaign by the NRMA.

The plans include speeding zones to be posted on mobile speed camera signs, as well as changes to make mobile speed camera vehicles more clearly marked and visible.

The announcement comes off the back of an NRMA proposal put to the State Government in the lead up to this year's election.

It originated from NRMA's Speak Out Interactive Advocacy portal by NRMA Member 'Kevin W'.

"The problem is that if you are unfamiliar with the piece of road then you often have no idea what the speed limit is that is being policed," he said.

"The camera cars should state on their signs what the limit is in the zone they are policing."

NRMA North Coast Director Wendy Machin said the announcement adds weight to the argument that speed cameras aren't about revenue raising, but about saving lives

"In a year when the state's road toll is 35 higher than last year it is clear that we need to be smarter at finding ways to slow people down," she said.

She said the policy would make the state's roads safer.

"This is a common sense policy announcement from the NSW Government today," Ms Machin said.

"The Government deserves credit for adopting this initiative from the NRMA and we also thank our member Kevin, who used grass roots campaigning to help us get the job done.

"This announcement will help ensure people know the local speed limit, which will help slow them down and, importantly, go a long way to ensuring people don't get booked inadvertently breaking the law."
