RFS crews monitoring bush fire near Coffs Harbour

A BUSH fire is continuing to burn through an area of Big Boambee Mountain.

CREWS from the Rural Fire Service are on scene as a fire burns on Big Boambee Mountain.

The moderate blaze is currently under control however the inaccessibility is making it challenging to extinguish.

RFS Inspector Michael Brougham said three crews responded to the scene on Saturday after the fire was reported to authorties.

It was believed to have been started by lighting on Wednesday.

"It is a particularly difficult area to access due to the terrain so crews had to go in on-foot," Insp Brougham said.

"Crews worked hard on the western side of the fire on Saturday but the south east area was too steep."

A water bomber was deployed to the fire on Saturday and again today in an effort to combat the fire.

Insp Brougham said there were no structures in the pathway of the blaze, and rain predicted on Wedensday was hoped to bring relief.

"Smoke is visible from the Pacific Hwy and residents in the Middle Boambee and Englands Rd areas should be particuarly aware," he said.

The fire is a reminder for residents on the Coffs Coast to plan and activate their bush fire survival plans.
