Public to have say on controversial Coffs Harbour Gold Cup public holiday

It’s the race that stops a local government area and this year it copped a torrent of criticism with most of Coffs’ new Mayoral candidates speaking out against it.

It’s a tradition that stretches back to 1971, but did we see the last of the Coffs Cup public holiday in 2021?

This year’s running of the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup copped a fair bit of flak with some fearful of the health implications of hosting the event as the pandemic raged in NSW.

While those fears may have proved unfounded, it wasn’t the only issue on people’s minds. For years the community has debated a decision to allow a half-day public holiday for the event, which could only host 2500 people in 2021.

The decision rests with Coffs Harbour City Council who are now are seeking public comment on whether to continue to support the race with a holiday for a 51st year.

While the council has often sought public opinion on the day, it has always opted to continue the tradition despite the controversy.

This year, Mayoral candidates jockeying for votes spoke out about the holiday, with most opposing it. When the Coffs Coast Advocate asked readers what they thought, there was similar response.

“Nothing against the event, but it shouldn't be a public holiday. It feels like the majority of business owners are effectively paying NOT to go to this event.”Dave Horsley said.

“No need for a public holiday. For the population of Coffs how many attend? Just take an afternoon off,”Sharon Connolly said.

“If there must be a holiday, make it something that doesn’t celebrate animal cruelty, gambling and drunkenness.” Rowena Dexter said.

However, there were still some who wanted to see the holiday retained.

“Should be a full day public holiday,” Mat Huxley said.

“I’ve attended (two) Coffs Cups plus the Ramornie in Grafton, there’s nothing better than a country race meet on Cup day,” Sydney Milko said.

“Half a day once a year. Just enjoy it … OR NOT.” Jeremy Few said.

A public holiday isn’t the only option on the table however, with the council able to declare a ‘Local Event Day’ meaning individual businesses could decide whether to treat the event as a holiday or not.
