Yamba’s Phoenix Talbot has made his mark at Coffs Harbour breaks yet again, becoming the youngest champion at the Billabong Oz Grom Cup.
With the finals at Park Beach being live streamed to audiences across the world, Talbot put on a show to claim an impressive victory in the 8-and-under Mixed division, his second major win.
Talbot’s score of 10.60 confirmed his nous in the Coffs Harbour beach break conditions after the 7-year-old goofy footer took first place in the same division at the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp back in September.
It was a tough day at the office for some of the Coffs/Clarence favourites with Angourie’s Harley Walters and Sawtell’s Rosie Smart bowing out before the final.
Sandy Beach’s Sage Lewis, Coffs Harbour’s Luca Martin and Scotts Head’s Avalon Vowels all picked up placings in their respective divisions.
Overall, nine new champions were crowned at the end of the five day event, which featured competitors from Australia, New Zealand and the USA.
The event, now in its eighth year, has been steadily growing in stature and this year catered for over 200 competitors.
Lennix Smith of Barrack Point wrapped up his final year in the competition with a bang, surfing impeccably over the course of the event and taking out the 16-and-Under Boys division.
Burleigh Water’s Charlotte Mulley surfed like a seasoned veteran who had honed their backhand on the long righthanders of the Gold Coast as she claimed victory in the 16-and-Under Girls division.
Former champions include 2016 World Junior Champion and current WSL World Championship Tour surfer Macy Callaghan who claimed her respective division in the event’s inaugural year.
