Pair charged in Coffs Harbour over Glenorie ram raid

A man and woman have been arrested in the state’s north for allegedly trying to rob an ATM before setting fire to a vehicle in Sydney earlier this year.

Two alleged criminal gang members have been charged after an alleged attempted ram raid in Sydney’s north west last month.

Police were called to a shopping centre northwest of Sydney on Old Northern Road in Glenorie about 11.30pm on January 30 after someone tried to steal an ATM.

Police will allege a white Toyota HiLux drove to the centre before three people tried to dislodge the machine.

Officers allege they made a number of unsuccessful attempts before leaving.

Emergency services were called to a vehicle fire about an hour later in McClymont Road in Kenthurst.

Firefighters put it out but the vehicle, a Toyota HiLux, was destroyed.

Police allege the HiLux was stolen and linked to the attempted theft of the ATM.

After further inquiries and an appeal for information, a 29-year-old woman was arrested at a caravan park on the Pacific Highway, Coffs Harbour, about 7.30am on Tuesday.

Police searched the woman when they allegedly found a loaded homemade firearm, which was seized for forensic examination.

The woman was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station, where she was charged with attempt larceny, destroy or damage property in company, destroy or damage property in company by fire, participate in criminal group, destroy or damage property intend criminal activity group and possess unauthorised firearm.

Shortly after, a 22-year-old man was arrested at a correctional centre in Grafton.

He was charged with attempt larceny, destroy or damage property in company, destroy or damage property in company by fire, participate in criminal group, and destroy or damage property intend criminal activity of group.

The pair was refused bail and will appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court on Wednesday.

Investigations into the incident continue.
