Bonville highway crash: Man lay undiscovered by side of road near Coffs Harbour

The man found dead on the side of the road after a horror motorway crash south of Coffs Harbour was undiscovered for almost four days. Here’s the latest.

Emergency services faced confronting scenes as a young man was found dead after a single-vehicle car wreck at Bonville, south of Coffs Harbour.

The man and the wreckage of the vehicle lay undiscovered for some time on the Pacific Motorway before being found late on Monday afternoon.

NSW Police say the man is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be aged 26, with early investigations indicating that the crash may have occurred on Friday, November 25.

Emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle being located down an embankment by a passing motorist - said to be a truck driver who with an elevated view, spotted the wreckage in the bush.

The crash near the Archville Station Road overpass occurred on a 110kmh signposted stretch.

The 2010 model black Audi A4 was found down an embankment near the intersection of the Pacific Motorway and Archville Station Rd off ramp.

It’s understood the Audi was travelling southbound, crossed the median strip, and crashed into a culvert on the opposite side of the motorway.

Initial police investigations believe the man was able to walk a short distance from the crash before succumbing to his injuries.

The man was the sole occupant.

Speed and driver fatigue are avenues of investigation.

The crash was discovered only when a separate minor crash on the motorway led to gridlock, and the truck driver noticed the stricken vehicle.

NSW Police were investigating the scene on Monday evening, which was also attended by the Rural Fire Service and State Emergency Service.

Investigations are continuing and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
