Since returning to Coffs Harbour Kaleah Walker has fallen back into drug use and related criminal activity it was heard in court recently.
The 26-year-old appeared before Coffs Harbour Local Court via audiovisual link on Monday June 20 where she pleaded guilty to a range of offences from the past six months.
The most serious matter she was facing, according to Magistrate Ian Rodgers, involved an incident on April 14 where she drove – despite having her licence suspended – dangerously close to a cyclist with an illicit drug in her system.
Mr Rodgers told the court that Walker had attended residential rehabilitation as part of a previous court order in 2019 and that she had “successfully abstained” from drugs for a period of time and that her gaps in offending “correspond with periods of abstinence”.
At beach carpark with drugs, money and knife
Walker recently breached previous bail conditions and was remanded in custody after being picked up by police at the carpark at Gallows Beach on June 14 with drugs, money, several small resealable bags and an 18cm knife.
Police facts tendered to court say she is “well known to police for possessing and supplying prohibited drugs” and was seen at the carpark in the passenger seat of a green Mazda registered in her name.
When police spoke to her she appeared nervous and was avoided eye contact, documents tendered to the court outlined.
Officers searched her pockets and when they asked what was in the small resealable bags she replied “it’s just cutter” and in relation to the ownership of the pants: “these aren’t my pants”.
According to police facts they searched her purse and found $580 and numerous bank and identification cards that did not belonging to her.
She told officers she needed to keep cash on her as she lived with “sketchy” people.
They searched her bag and found a large quantity of small resealable bags; a set of working scales; and an 18cm knife with a 7cm blade.
She was charged with possessing a prohibited drug (1.3grams of meth) and having custody of knife in a public place – first offence.
For the charge of ‘possess prohibited drug’ she was convicted and no penalty imposed. For having custody of a knife in a public place she was convicted and fined $440.
Probably the ‘most serious matter’
Walker was also facing charges in relation to a previous incident on April 15 where she drove, despite having her licence suspended, close to a cyclist with drugs in her system.
Police facts tendered to the court say she was driving east along Orlando Street and was followed by a fully marked highway patrol vehicle when she was observed to be driving very close to a cyclist. She then overtook him, travelling closely and sounding her horn.
When pulled over she told officers she had injected meth a week ago.
In relation to this incident she pleaded guilty to drive motor vehicle while licence suspended -second offence and was convicted and sentenced to an 18-month Community Correction Order and disqualified from holding a driver’s licence for six months.
She also pleaded guilty to drive vehicle with an illicit drug present in blood – second offence and was convicted and fined $660.
